Combined Visualization of Intracardiac Blood Flow and Wall Motion Assessed by MRI

چکیده
MRI is a well known and widely spread technique to characterize cardiac pathologies due to its high spatial resolution, its accessibility and its adjustable contrast among soft tissues. In an attempt to close the gap between blood flow, myocardial movement and the cardiac function, researching in the MRI field addresses the quantification of some of the most relevant blood and myocardial parameters. During this project a new tool that allows reading, postprocessing, quantifying and visualizing 2D motion sense MR data has been developed. In order to analyze intracardiac blood flow and wall motion, the new tool quantifies velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, pressure and strain. In the results section the final tool is presented, describing the visualization modes, which represent the quantified parameters both individually and combined; and detailing auxiliary tool features as masking, thresholding, zooming, and cursors. Finally, technical aspects as the convenience of two dimensional examinations to create compact tools, and the challenges of masking as part of the relative pressure calculation, among others, are discussed; ending up with the proposal of some future developments.

PULSATILE MOTION OF BLOOD IN A CIRCULAR TUBE OF VARYING CROSS-SECTION WITH SLIP FLOW
Pulsatile motion of blood in a circular tube of varying cross-section has been developed by considering slip flow at the tube wall and the blood to be a non- Newtonian biviscous incompressible fluid. The tube wall is supposed to be permeable and the fluid exchange across the wall is accounted for by prescribing the normal velocity of the fluid at the tube wall. The tangential velocity of the fl...
متن کاملVisualization and Quantification of Regional Ventricular Wall and Blood Velocities by 3T 4D PC-MRI
Background Wall motion together with the development of intracavity pressure and inside shear stress cause synchronous myocardial contraction and relaxation, as well as blood flow. These variables are related to cardiovascular function and disease. Assessing regional wall velocities and blood flow may therefore provide quantitative information regarding abnormalities in wall contractility and a...
متن کاملVolume Tracking: A New Method for Visualization of Intracardiac Blood Flow from Three-Dimensional, Time-Resolved, Three-Component Magnetic Resonance Velocity Mapping Appendix: Theory and Numerical Implementation
This document describes the theory and technical details of Volume Tracking, a new method for visualization of flow measured using four-dimensional phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (4D PC-MRI) [1]. Volume Tracking provides a new visual impression of the flow compared to particle tracing, the most commonly used method for visualization of 4D PC-MRI data. Volume Tracking uses a novel for...
متن کاملParticle Trace Visualization of Cardiac Flow Patterns using 3D Phase Contrast MRI: An in vitro Comparison with Streamlines Created using Dye
Introduction Intracardiac flow patterns can be visualized by particle traces obtained from three-dimensional phase contrast MRI. Good results have been shown for stationary [1] and time-resolved data [2]. New off-line retrospective gated 3D phase contrast techniques, providing high resolution time-resolved 3D velocity data, have improved the accuracy of the calculated particle traces [3]. While...
متن کاملEcho speckle imaging of blood particles with high-frame-rate echocardiography
Cardiac blood flow patterns such as the vortex flow pattern inside the left ventricle have been studied to provide new information for the diagnosis of the pumping function of the human heart. Complex blood flow is visualized by imaging echo speckles of blood particles because the speckle-like texture translates to the motion of blood particles. We proposed an imaging method for echo speckles o...
